Lincoln Parks and Recreation is inviting residents to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, with free neighborhood gatherings designed to bring families, neighbors and law enforcement together before the start of the school year.
Recreation Coordinator Dan Payzant says while National Night Out has traditionally centered on neighborhood block parties, the city’s community centers have become natural gathering places because of their strong partnerships with neighborhood organizations, schools and the Lincoln Police Department.
Lincoln Parks and Recreation will host events at four locations across the city: Air Park Community Center, Belmont Recreation Center, Calvert Recreation Center and F Street Community Center. Each event will feature visits from Lincoln police officers along with food, games and family-friendly activities.
Payzant says the gatherings are designed to help strengthen neighborhoods by giving residents a chance to meet the officers who serve their communities in a relaxed setting while also getting to know their neighbors.
Activities vary by location but include hot dog cookouts, chips, watermelon, face painting, yard games, music and even a Kona Ice truck at Belmont Recreation Center. F Street Community Center will feature food from the grill, games and music. Payzant says the events are free and open to everyone, whether they’re bringing a family or attending on their own.
He says National Night Out offers an easy opportunity to build connections, enjoy time with neighbors and interact with police officers in a positive, informal environment. Payzant adds the celebrations also serve as one last community event before students head back to school.
