Nebraska Democrats have a vacancy to fill on the November ballot after Cindy Burbank declined the party’s nomination for U.S. Senate.
Secretary of State Bob Evnen confirmed his office received Burbank’s formal declination of the nomination. Evnen notified Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb of the withdrawal in a letter dated July 21.
According to Evnen, Burbank’s decision creates a ballot vacancy under Nebraska state law. The party may designate a replacement nominee using the certification process outlined in state statute.
The certification naming a replacement and a $1,740 filing fee must be submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office by Sept. 1.
The documents do not state why Burbank declined the nomination or identify anyone being considered as her replacement.
