Wilderness Park visitors should expect trail closures Wednesday and Thursday as Lincoln Parks and Recreation conducts a prescribed burn to improve native habitat and reduce wildfire risk. The burn is scheduled to begin at noon Wednesday, July 22, on approximately 24 acres near the 14th Street trailhead parking lot, between Yankee Hill Road and Rokeby Road.
As part of the project, the Wilderness Park Green Trail east of marker 68 will be closed beginning Wednesday and is expected to reopen by noon Thursday. Parks officials are asking the public to avoid the area while crews complete the work.
Parks and Recreation Greenways District Supervisor Aaron Druery said prescribed burns are an important management tool used to maintain native plants and grasses, reduce the risk of future wildfires, and improve wildlife habitat. He said staff carefully monitor weather and air quality conditions to ensure burns are conducted safely.
