A Lincoln family was forced from their home early Saturday morning after the basement caught on fire. Just before 4:00, Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews were sent to a home near 50th and South Street after a caller reported hearing popping noises and smelling something burning in the basement.
LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says when firefighters arrived, they found a fire in a basement bedroom. The residents were able to safely evacuate before crews arrived, along with three dogs and one cat.
Crews quickly brought the fire under control, but the home sustained significant damage and has been declared uninhabitable. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported to the resident or the pets.
Damage is estimated at $ 50,000.
