The Lincoln Police Department is warning residents about a jury duty scam that has already claimed multiple victims this month. LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says since July 1, three people have reported being contacted by scammers who claimed there was a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty.

“In two cases, the scammers claimed to be law enforcement and told the victims they needed to send money to clear the warrant,” Thomas says. “One of the victims received a fake jury notice in the mail.”

Thomas says a 24-year-old victim lost $4,200 and a 25-year-old is out $600.  The 41-year-old victim who received a fake jury scam notice didn’t sent money. She urges residents to be aware of these types of scams. “If you get a call from someone claiming you owe money for missing jury duty, hang up. Law enforcement will not call you to request payment.”

If you have concerns about a jury summons, officials recommend contacting the court or the Lancaster County Jury Commissioner directly to verify the information. More information about jury duty and common scams is available through the Lancaster County Jury Commissioner website.
