The hottest stretch of the summer so far is expected to arrive later this week, with the National Weather Service warning that heat index values could reach 100 to 105 degrees from Friday through Sunday, increasing the risk of heat-related illness across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
Forecasters say temperatures will remain seasonably hot through Wednesday and Thursday before intensifying heading into the weekend under a persistent ridge of high pressure.
Wednesday will bring another warm day with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s, following early-morning patchy fog. The weather will remain dry, with little chance of rain through at least Sunday.
Weekend Heat Intensifies
The National Weather Service expects daytime highs to climb into the mid- to upper 90s Friday and Saturday, with some communities potentially reaching 100 degrees Sunday. Combined with increasing humidity, the heat index—or “feels-like” temperature—could top 105 degrees, particularly in northeast Nebraska and urban areas such as Omaha.
For Lincoln, forecast heat index values are expected to climb from the lower 90s on Wednesday to approximately:
- Friday: 98°
- Saturday: 102°
- Sunday: 104°
- Monday: 101°

Little Relief Overnight
Another concern is the lack of overnight cooling.
While lows through Thursday morning will generally fall into the 60s, nighttime temperatures beginning Friday are forecast to remain in the 70s, limiting the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat. Lincoln’s overnight lows are expected to remain between 74 and 80 degrees through the weekend.
Meteorologists note that prolonged warm nights can significantly increase the cumulative impact of heat, especially for people without air conditioning.
Heat Risk Increases Each Day
The Weather Prediction Center’s HeatRisk forecast shows conditions worsening steadily through the weekend.
- Wednesday: Minor heat risk, primarily affecting heat-sensitive individuals.
- Thursday: Moderate heat risk develops across much of the area.
- Friday: Moderate to Major heat risk expands.
- Saturday and Sunday: Major heat risk covers nearly all of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, with isolated areas of Extreme Heat Risk in northeast Nebraska.
A Major HeatRisk means dangerous conditions for most people without proper hydration and cooling, while Extreme HeatRisk indicates dangerous conditions for anyone exposed to prolonged heat.
Heat Advisories Possible
The National Weather Service says confidence is increasing that the hottest weather will arrive this weekend, although official heat headlines have not yet been issued.
Forecasters say Heat Advisories may become necessary Friday through Sunday if humidity trends continue upward.
Relief Expected Next Week
The prolonged hot spell should begin to ease early next week as a cold front moves through the Central Plains.
Although the front is expected to bring cooler temperatures, forecasters say rainfall chances currently appear limited. A return to northwesterly flow aloft could eventually allow disturbances to bring precipitation opportunities back to the region later next week.
