The Defenders of Freedom Air & Space Show returns to Offutt Air Force Base August 8th and 9th with a major change designed to make getting to the event easier. “Everyone’s going to be able to park on base rather than having to catch buses,” says Offutt Chief of Public Affairs Kris Pierce.
He says they will have a new vehicle-based parking pass. “It doesn’t cost anything, but it helps us organize where everyone’s going to park and keeps traffic flowing smoothly.” The free parking pass is available through the air show’s website and will help organizers manage the base’s roughly 11,000 parking spaces.
Pierce says the off-base parking system used in 2024 was necessary because flood recovery projects and levee work eliminated available parking areas. The show’s featured performers include the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team flying alongside the historic P-51 Mustang as part of the America 250 theme celebrating the nation’s past and future.
The popular Tora! Tora! Tora! Pearl Harbor reenactment returns for the first time in 15 years, along with the U.S. Air Force Academy parachute team. Organizers are also preparing for August heat by doubling the amount of free drinking water available. “Guests are welcome to bring in a water bottle full of water or ice, and we’re going to have thousands of gallons of water available to make sure we beat the heat.”
Despite not having the Blue Angels this year, Offutt is still expecting between 70,000 and 75,000 visitors over the weekend. Pierce says the air show is about more than aerial demonstrations. “It’s about having people come on base, learn about the 55th Wing and our military partners, appreciate what the men and women in uniform do, and give families a chance to experience aviation up close.”
Gates open at 8:30 each morning, with flying demonstrations scheduled from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
