The Lincoln Police Department’s Traffic Unit cited nearly two dozen drivers during a targeted traffic enforcement operation at Highway 77 and Warlick Boulevard, an intersection that has seen multiple serious crashes in recent weeks.

Police said the special enforcement project was conducted in response to both the recent crashes and numerous complaints from motorists about excessive speeds through the construction zone.

During the two-hour operation, Traffic Sgt. Sara Genoways recorded 25 drivers traveling between 60 and 79 mph in the posted 50 mph construction zone.

Traffic officers were able to stop nearly all speeding drivers and issue citations.

The department says it will continue targeted enforcement efforts in areas where speeding and dangerous driving behaviors create safety concerns for motorists and road construction workers.
