A new scholarship program is giving Lincoln musicians a chance to take their careers to the next level. Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and community leaders announced Tuesday that the MusicBox Artist Development Program will award $35,000 in James Valentine Scholarships.

The funding comes from Lincoln native and Maroon 5 lead guitarist James Valentine, who is supporting the next generation of local artists. The MusicBox, also known as MBX, opened in downtown Lincoln in April of last year. The city-owned facility serves as a rehearsal, recording, performance and education space for musicians.

“The City of Lincoln and our partners created the MusicBox to help artists hone their craft and grow careers in the music industry from right here in the capital city,”  Gaylor Baird says. “We are incredibly grateful to James Valentine for so generously giving back to his hometown and investing in the next generation of local musicians who can draw inspiration from his success.”

Program organizers say the scholarship money will be divided among three artists or bands selected through an application process. Winners will receive professional career development support, including recording a four-song project, a music release concert, professional photos and video, songwriting guidance, marketing assistance, business instruction and performance coaching.

MBX advisor Philip Zach says the goal is to provide opportunities that many local musicians otherwise could not afford and help set them up for long-term success in the music industry. Downtown Lincoln Association President Todd Ogden called the MusicBox “more than a space,” saying it has become a community that helps young artists build confidence and develop their talents.

Applications for the Artist Development Program are now being accepted. Artists must submit a performance video, biography, photo and any available recordings. Scholarship recipients are expected to release new music by the spring of 2027.
