The No. 1 Nebraska softball team suffered its first defeat since March 28, as the Cornhuskers’ 27-game winning streak was snapped as Alabama defeated Nebraska 5-1 Saturday in the Women’s College World Series.

The Crimson Tide (56-7) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a walk and a hit by pitch, Marlie Giles clubbed a three-run home run to give Alabama the lead. Then in the bottom of the third, Giles hit a sacrifice fly to left field to push the lead to four. After Hannah Camenzind hit a two-out, solo home run, the Huskers’ (52-7) only hit of the game, Jena Young singled to left to drive in a run and push the lead back to four.

The loss was Nebraska’s first since March 28, when UCLA downed the Huskers 6-5. The 27-game winning streak was the longest in school history. Nebraska nows drops to the elimination bracket, where the Huskers will face defending national champion Texas at 2 p.m. Sunday. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m. on B-107.3.
