A Norfolk-born investigative reporter is launching an independent bid for Congress in Nebraska’s First District. Austin Ahlman has announced he will challenge Republican Congressman Mike Flood, running what he calls a “Take Nebraska Back” campaign focused on working families, farmers, ranchers, and small businesses.
Ahlman, the son of local meatpackers affected by the Tyson plant shutdown, says both major political parties have failed ordinary Nebraskans while catering to wealthy donors and corporate interests.
In his campaign launch, Ahlman pointed to personal hardship inside his own family. He says his mother lost her job after her employer collapsed, and his father’s cancer treatments nearly bankrupted the family. Ahlman also revealed his mother died by suicide earlier this year after the family struggled financially.
Ahlman says his experience reflects what many Nebraska families are facing. “My family’s story isn’t unique. Families all across the state are fighting. Americans are ready to elect independents who work for them, not just the elites.”
The first-time candidate is campaigning as an independent, refusing corporate PAC money and distancing himself from both political parties. Ahlman sharply criticized Flood, accusing him of supporting cuts to food, health, and education assistance programs.
“Taking callous votes like that shows you’re too comfortable and you take your voters for granted.” Melissa Temple, a member of the Natural Resources District Board, has endorsed Ahlman , saying he understands the struggles many working-class Nebraskans face.
Ahlman has to collect signatures from at least 20 percent of registered voters in the 1st District who voted in the 2024 presidential election or 2,000 signatures. The deadline to file the partisan petition is Aug. 3.
