There was a upset in Nebraska’s race for Secretary of State following Tuesday night’s Primary Election. Incumbent Republican Bob Evnen was defeated by Omaha businessman Scott Petersen in a closely watched GOP contest.
Petersen now advances to the November General Election, where he’ll face Democrat Sarah Slattery. Evnen addressed the outcome Wednesday morning, calling his time in office the honor of a lifetime. “And I’m proud of all the great work our team accomplished these past eight years.
In a statement, Evnen highlighted accomplishments during his eight years as Secretary of State, including support for voter ID laws, efforts to ban outside money from ballot initiatives, and updates to Nebraska’s business services systems.
Evnen also pointed to work promoting Nebraska agriculture in international markets. “While we didn’t get the result we wanted, I look forward to serving out the remainder of my term, and I will work to ensure a seamless transition following the general election.”
Nebraska voters will decide the next Secretary of State this November.
