Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and community representatives gathered Wednesday morning at Woods Park to celebrate Earth Day, reporting that the City has made progress on, or completed, 76 percent of the items in its Climate Action Plan.
“This Earth Day, we celebrate cleaner air, better transportation, an expanded local food system, resilient infrastructure, sustainable growth, and economic opportunity—all made possible through the bold vision of our Climate Action Plan and the strong community partnerships bringing it to life,” Gaylor Baird says.
The development of a Climate Action Plan was one of Mayor Gaylor Baird’s top priorities after taking office in May 2019. Approved in 2021, the plan outlines a community-wide vision to increase resilience and create new economic opportunities. It includes an ambitious goal of reducing Lincoln’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
Other key initiatives in the plan include increasing energy efficiency in City facilities and operations; transitioning the City’s light vehicle fleet to electric or renewable fuels by 2040; developing a strategy to secure a second source of water supply for Lincoln; and building resilience in the Salt Creek floodplain to protect vulnerable neighborhoods and businesses.
