Earth Day was observed by more than 190 countries on Wednesday, but the City of Lincoln’s official celebration will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Nebraska Innovation Campus.
“As the City of Lincoln works to reduce the impacts of extreme weather events, protect vulnerable residents, and grow our economy in smart and sustainable ways, we encourage community members to celebrate all the ways our community is becoming more sustainable,” says Mayor Gaylor Baird.
Organized by the Lincoln Earth Day Coalition, the free family event will feature the Lincoln City Libraries Bookmobile, the Lincoln Electric System Tiny House, local food vendors, and a plant sale. Additional activities include a bike rodeo featuring an obstacle course and a clothing swap, with volunteer menders available to make minor repairs.
With nice weather expected, families can also fly kites. More than 40 groups from around the Lincoln area will be set up. “This annual community celebration of Earth Day showcases the many environmental organizations doing great work in our community all year long,” says Brittney Wees, a Lincoln Earth Day Coalition member.
“There are engaging activities planned throughout the event for families and friends to support environmental stewardship and learn about sustainable living.” Free parking will be available in the lot north of Nebraska Innovation Campus at 2021 Transformation Drive.
National Earth Day began on April 22, 1970. For more information about the celebration and other Earth Day activities in April click here.
