The Lincoln Police Department has released the results of its Winter Traffic Safety Project, aimed at reducing crashes during one of the most dangerous times of the year for drivers. The enforcement effort ran from December 4th through March 31st.
According to LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas, the goal was to increase traffic enforcement during traditionally high-risk periods for collisions. Officers worked overtime shifts as part of the campaign, focusing on common factors that lead to crashes. Those included speeding, driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, and failing to yield the right of way.
Over the course of the project, officers conducted 740 traffic stops, issuing 865 citations and 180 warnings. Among those citations, 389 were for drivers without registration and 212 were for speeding. Police also cited 73 drivers for lack of insurance and 65 for not wearing seatbelts.
The department says the enforcement campaign was made possible through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
