The Lincoln City Council is considering a plan submitted by Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird that works to ensure all citizens can move safely throughout the city.  The Safe Streets Lincoln Vision Zero Action Plan effectively identifies and enhance safety improvements and policies designed to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injury crashes.

“The creation of this local plan reflects our community-wide commitment to safer streets,” Mayor Gaylor Baird said. “We embrace the vision of a future with zero fatalities and serious injury crashes, knowing that even one life lost is too many.”

Liz Elliott, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Director, says the initiative reflects significant momentum towards commuter and pedestrian safety. The plan represents two years of dedicated partnerships among public officials at the local, county, and state levels, advisory groups, cultural organizations, advocacy groups, neighborhood associations, and community members.

“Our community’s voices played an essential role throughout the process by helping guide our review of safety data,” Elliott says.

Community engagement efforts supported the identification of four primary focus areas in the plan, identified 19 projects, and 24 recommended strategies. Focus areas include:

  • Safer Streets – Build on proven design and operational strategies to further strengthen safety along the transportation system
  • Safer Mobility – Ensuring the transportation system is safe for all users
  • Safer People – Education and enforcement for safe user behaviors
  • Safer Outcomes – Monitoring progress to ensure safer outcomes

The Lincoln City Council held a public hearing on the issue at their March 16th council meeting. For more details click here.
