Parks and Recreation staff will conduct a controlled burn from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, on about 5 acres of the woodland near South First Street and Old Cheney Road in Wilderness Park.
The Yellow Trail south of Old Cheney Road and north of Warlick Boulevard will be closed until noon Wednesday, March 11. This includes access to Wilderness Park at Marker 36 off of the Jamaica North Trail. Community members are advised to avoid the area during this project.
Aaron Druery, Parks and Recreation Greenways District Supervisor, said that controlled burns are a tool to manage large areas of native plants and grasses, reduce wildfire risk, and enhance wildlife habitat. Parks staff monitor weather and air quality conditions to ensure safe burns.
