In recognition of March as Colon Cancer Awareness Month, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department is offering free, easy-to-use colon cancer screening kits at participating pharmacies for residents ages 45 to 74 through April 30.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Nebraska and the U.S. Although incidence and death rates of the disease have declined, Nebraska’s burden remains higher than the national average, according to national data. The state also ranks 41st in the country for screening rates. Early screening prevents cancer and saves lives.

Cases are also increasing in younger adults, making early screening more important than ever. If you are experiencing symptoms like persistent stomach pain, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss, talk to your healthcare provider right away.
