Behind a career day from Dylan Carey, the Nebraska baseball team defeated South Dakota State, 5-4, Wednesday at Hawks Field. Carey was 5-for-5 at the plate, a career high in hits, with two RBI and two doubles, including the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie.

Along with Carey, Mac Moyer was 2-for-3 with a double and Cole Kitchens drove in a pair of runs. Kevin Mannell came out of the Cornhuskers’ (7-5) bullpen to earn the win, throwing 1.2 innings of shutout ball.

Carey got Nebraska on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to left. Kitchens followed with a two-run single to left, boosting the Huskers’ lead to 3-0. Cale Sanderson tacked on a run in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly, pushing Nebraska’s lead to 4-0.

But the Jackrabbits (4-8) chipped away. After SDSU scored two runs in the fifth, a two-run home run by Dayton Franke in the top of the eighth tied the game at four before Carey came through with the go-ahead double.

The Huskers open Big Ten play Friday at 2 p.m., taking on Michigan State at Hawks Field. Pregame coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on KLIN.
