With several inches of snow on the ground the United States Postal Service is asking customers to help keep snow away from curbside mailboxes. “The street crews do a great job when they plow the streets, but what happens is they bank that snow up against the mailboxes on the curb,” Postal Service spokesman Mark Inglett tells KLIN News.
He says curbside boxes need a cleared, accessible approach. “Clear a path at least six feet on both sides so the carrier has an approach and exit without backing up,” Inglett says. “Also be sure and keep approaches, steps and sidewalks clear of snow and ice to ensure safe and consistent delivery.”
Failure to maintain a clear, safe approach may result in temporary suspension of mail delivery to the location.teps and handrails to avoid injury to letter carriers or others. Overhangs should be free of snow and ice as well to reduce the risk of falling debris.
