Red Cross Opens Shelter For Residents of Lincoln Apartment Fire

By Tom Stanton Feb 19, 2026 | 7:56 AM

The American Red Cross is assisting residents impacted by Wednesday night’s fire at Waterbrook Apartments at 31st and N. Hill Road in north Lincoln.  A shelter has been opened at the Sandhills Global Event Center where volunteers are on hand to welcome people who have been displaced by the fire.

“The role of the Red Cross in the aftermath of any disaster is to focus on the immediate needs of those affected by providing a safe shelter, a place to sleep, meals, some health services and referrals to partner agencies,” says spokesman Josh Murray.

“The Red Cross will continue to coordinate with local officials and community partners to determine how to best support the affected residents in the days and weeks ahead.”  LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says a second alarm was called due to smoke seen in the attic vents.

Lierman says a carelessly discarded cigarette sparked the fire which caused about $100,000 in damage and residents in 12 units had to be relocated.
