Lincoln snow crews are treating streets with brine and salt and continuing plowing operations as a winter storm moves through the area.
Lincoln Transportation and Utilities spokesperson Erika Hill tells KLIN News that crews have been working for several hours, applying a brine-and-salt mixture ahead of falling temperatures to prevent ice buildup.
“This effort really helps once temperatures dive down this evening and overnight,” she said. “That helps prevent ice buildup due to the wet conditions.”
The National Weather Service reports the storm is expected to begin with wet snow before transitioning to a lighter, fluffier snowfall. Lincoln is forecast to receive about 1 to 3 inches.
Because the snow began wet, Hill said treating roads early helps keep material from washing away and allows crews to “debond” ice easily overnight and into the morning commute.
Initial plowing efforts will focus on emergency routes, bus routes and major arterial streets. Crews will continue working overnight and through Friday as needed.
“We plow until the job is done,” Hill said. “Drivers should always watch for slick spots and possible refreezing overnight. Please slow down and give crews a little bit of room to work.”
