For the second time in two weeks, the No. 11 Nebraska softball team defeated the No. 1 team in the nation, this time toppling No. 1 Texas Tech, 3-2 in Clearwater, Fla.
The Cornhuskers (6-4) also defeated then-No. 1 Texas, 8-5, Saturday, Feb. 7, in San Antonio, Texas. Nebraska had beaten the No. 1 team in the country just three times before in program history.
The Red Raiders (11-1) took the early advantage, scoring a run in the first and another in the third to build a 2-0 lead. But in the bottom of the fourth, Hannah Camenzind doubled off the wall in left. Jesse Farrell followed with a two-run home run to tie the game, the first time Texas Tech All-American pitcher NiJaree Canady had allowed back-to-back extra-base hits in her career. Later in the inning, Muhlbach drew a walk. Her pinch runner, Dakota Carter, stole second. Hannah Coor then ripped a single to left, scoring Carter to give NU the lead.
Jordy Frahm made it hold up. After Alexis Jensen (3-1) started and allowed just two runs in four innings to the Red Raiders, Frahm came out of the bullpen and retired all nine hitters she faced to earn her third save of the season. Canady (4-1) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched.
The Huskers are next in action at the Mary Nutter Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., taking on South Carolina at noon on Friday.
