No. 10 Nebraska softball ended its weekend on a sour note as Washington defeated the Cornhuskers, 3-2, in walkoff fashion. Nebraska ends its first weekend of play at 3-2, including a win over No.1 and defending national champion Texas Saturday.
On Sunday, the Huskies (2-2) took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the first inning. The Huskers answered in the second, as Hannah Camenzind hammered a home run to center field to tie the game at one. Nebraska had a chance to take the lead later that inning, but left the bases loaded.
Washington threatened again in the fourth. With two outs, Marley Teasley singled to center off Nebraska pitcher Jordy Frahm. The next hitter, Tia Durst, drove a ball to the wall in centerfield. Teasley tried to score from first, but was cut down on excellent throws by Hannah Coor and Frahm on the relay, keeping the game tied at one. The Huskies took the lead in the fifth, when Ava Carroll homered to center.
But the Huskers answered in the top of the sixth. Jesse Farrell led off the inning with a double to right, knocking Washington starter Sophia Ramuno out of the game. Then with two outs, Kacie Hoffmann doubled to left, scoring Farrell to tie the game at two.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Carroll lined a one-out single to left. Two wild pitches moved her to third, and she scored on a single to left by Jadyn Glab.
Carroll paced the Huskies’ offense, hitting 3-for-4 with a homer and a double. Hoffmann paced the Nebraska lineup, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Frahm (1-2) took the loss for NU, allowing 10 hits in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out 10. Morgan Reimer (1-1) grabbed the win in relief, throwing two shutout innings.
The Huskers are next in action Thursday in Clearwater, Fla., against No. 16 LSU. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
