A business leader and former student regent has announced his candidacy for the Omaha-based District 4 seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Justin Solomon was elected in 2010 to serve as the student body president and student regent. He later earned his MBA from NU, and went on to work for the Lincoln-based human services company Integrated Life Choices, for which he currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. The company has nearly 1,800 employees and focuses on supporting individuals with developmental disabilities across Nebraska, Colorado, and California.
Solomon lives in the Dundee neighborhood, where he serves as the Treasurer for both the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Douglas County and the Dundee Elementary PTO.
Nebraska State Board of Regents are technically non-partisan. But Solomon is a registered member of the Democratic Party, and he previously served as campaign manager for Bob Whitehouse’s 2012 election to the District 4 seat.
“My life is a product of the opportunities Nebraska’s public education system provides,” said Solomon in a statement. “From the classrooms of the Omaha Public Schools to the halls of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I have seen firsthand how an accessible, high-quality education can transform a life. I am running for the Board of Regents to ensure that these same opportunities remain a reality for the next generation of Nebraska families.”
Solomon describes his platform as focused on three core pillars: “Affordability and access for students, workforce and economic development, and protecting research and academic freedom at the University of Nebraska.”
In a statement announcing his candidacy, Solomon said he will rely on his private sector background to lead the University of Nebraska into the future.
“The value proposition of higher education is changing faster than ever,” he said. “The University needs leaders on the Board of Regents who have developed a vision for expansive organizations, who have hired leaders to implement the strategy created by the board and senior leadership, and who have engaged in getting entire organizations pushing in the same direction.”
