Nearly 300 Lincoln Southeast students walked out of class just before 10:00 Wednesday morning to protest ICE. Students chanted and held signs as they walked around the school near 37th and Van Dorn.
Southeast Principal Tanner Penrod sent an email to families Wednesday night emphasizing that student walkouts are not approved nor organized by Southeast High School or Lincoln Public Schools.
“Our schools are focused on providing a normal learning environment for all students. While they are not sponsored by our school nor the school district, we cannot stop a student from exercising their first amendment right and walking out as long as they are not disruptive to others.”
Lincoln Police tell KLIN News the walk-out went well from their standpoint. “We had our LSEHS SRO and a few officers out there driving alongside to ensure safety,” says Public Information Manager Erika Thomas. “I think one officer pulled over someone to warn them because there were some vehicles in the area driving by with signs and people hanging out of windows.”
She says otherwise it went smoothly.
