The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office released more details Tuesday morning after a sixth grade teacher and wresting coach at Palmyra Jr. and Sr. High school was arrested Monday morning for having an inappropriate relationship with a former student.
LSO Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says 26-year-old Cody Pester of Lincoln started a relationship with an 18-year-old Palmyra graduate in May 2025 and they reportedly would meet at athletic events.
“Since May of 2025 Pester and the victim had contact over 13,000 times on the phone.” Houchin says some of the conversations were sexual in nature and it’s believed the two began a sexual relationship in July.
Under Nebraska law, it’s illegal for a school employee to engage in sexual activity or contact with a student who is enrolled or was enrolled within the previous 90 days. Pester was arrested Monday. In a message on the school’s website, Palmyra Superintendent Michael Hart said after learning of allegations against Cody Pester he was removed from all classroom and extracurricular duties.
“The safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority,” Hart said in a message to families. “While this situation is deeply concerning, it is also important to remember that this is an active investigation, and we must allow the legal process to proceed. For that reason, the district will not be able to share any additional details at this time.”
Hart also said they understand that news like this can be upsetting for students, families, and staff. “Counseling and support services will be made available for students at the high school who may need them in the coming days, and families are encouraged to reach out to school administrators with any additional concerns.”
