Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says his department has begun an investigation into the actions of Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh after she removed historical pictures from the walls of the Capitol on January 7.
Governor Jim Pillen called for the investigation to determine if a crime was committed. “We have assigned an investigator to this investigation,” Wagner says. He says they will be reviewing video and conducting interviews, including security people at the Capitol.
A 40-second security video released by Pillen appears to show Cavanaugh removing several of the State’s America 250 displays showcasing prominent figures and events throughout our Nation’s history and stashing them in her office.
“When those interviews and reviews are complete, we will consult with Lancaster County Attorney Pat Condon to determine if a crime has been committed,” Wagner says. He says charges could range from theft to criminal mischief to disturbing the peace. It’s also possible that no criminal charges will be filed.
He says this is the first time LSO has investigated the conduct of a state senator. Wagner says there are special laws in place that would prevent an arrest from being made until the legislative session is over.
