For the first time in nearly 25 years parking ticket fines are going up in the City of Lincoln. The City Council voted 6-1 Monday to boost fines from $10 to $15. Councilwoman Sandra Washington voted to increase the fees.
“With an understanding that if there was a possibility to find a solution in the construction area, that is the most concern, that we find that solution.” Councilman Tom Beckius cast one of the yes votes, citing incoming infrastructure changes in downtown with the expected ‘O’ Street revitalization project..
“I think we’re entering a construction period that’s pretty confusing and I want to not add to the confusion,” Beckius says. “Lincoln is still going to pretty darn affordable when it comes to the fines being assessed.”
Violators who don’t take care of the $15 ticket within a week will have to pay $20. The penalty for loading zone parking violations was also increase from $10 to $25.
