On Air Now
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
A new runway project is underway at Lincoln Airport.  Chad Lay is Director of Planning and Development and tells KLIN News it’s a project that was a long time in the making.  “There was a lot of funding hurdles we had to overcome both with the FFA and the military, but that’s all been done now and as a result, we’ve been able to start construction on completely rebuilding our main runway.”
That runway is nearly 13,000 feet long and is one of the larger ones in the country.  “It is a legacy piece of infrastructure left over from the Lincoln Air Force days when we had B-47 Bombers here,” Lay says.  Today, they continue to serve  the Nebraska National Guard 155th Air Refueling Wing and Nebraska Army National Guard.
Lay says some of the existing pavement dates back to the 1950s making the investment critical to safety, reliability, and long-term operations at Lincoln Airport. Lay tells KLIN News they are currently removing all of the pavement from the runway and the entire projects is expected to take about two years.
LNK will be using the other two runways during construction, but he tells KLIN News the primary impacts should be relatively insignificant.  “Day in and day out, the re shouldn’t be much of a change,” Lay says.  “We may have some reduced capability on those really inclement weather days, but beyond that, it should be business as usual.
