For the first time in state history, the Nebraska State Capitol will be lit blue in recognition of Human Trafficking Prevention Month. To mark the historic moment, I’ve Got A Name and The Set Me Free Project is partnering with Lincoln Airport to host “Stronger Together,” a free, family-friendly event on the West Plaza of the Capitol Building on January 10 from 5–6 p.m.
The airport is an active participant in the Blue Lightning Initiative, a national program led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that trains aviation and airport personnel to recognize indicators of human trafficking and respond appropriately. Airport marketing director Rachel Barth says LNK was the first airport in Nebraska to formally pledge its participation in the initiative, underscoring its commitment to protecting passengers, employees, and the broader community.
Barth says the event will bring together advocates, service providers, and community members for a visible show of solidarity against human trafficking. Attendees will hear directly from organizations working on the front lines of prevention, education, and survivor support, gaining insight into how trafficking impacts communities across Nebraska and how collective action plays a vital role in combating it.
“This is more than a building lighting, it’s a call to action,” says Bob Burton, Executive Director of I’ve Got A Name. “When our community shows up together, including partners like Lincoln Airport who see this issue firsthand, it sends a clear message that Nebraska is united, informed, and committed to ending human trafficking.”
Attendees are encouraged to participate in a Blue Out Challenge by wearing blue to the event. Blue is the international color of human trafficking awareness, and organizers hope to fill the West Plaza with a sea of blue to symbolize Nebraska’s shared commitment to prevention, protection, and hope.
Food trucks and warm drinks will be available. While the event is free, advance registration is encouraged. You can click here to register.
