The Better Business Bureau has issued some tips when it comes to holiday returns.  Josh Planos with the BBB in Lincoln is emphasizing keeping receipts and packaging and understanding each retailers policies.
“Especially holiday extensions versus final sales, checking online return rules, acting quickly, and using credit cards for protection against scams.”   Here are some of the key holiday return tips:
  • Keep Proof & Packaging: Hold onto original receipts, gift receipts, and all original packaging (boxes, manuals, tags) as retailers often require them for returns or exchanges.
  • Know the Policy: Extended holiday return periods (e.g., through January) are common, but check for exceptions on clearance items or specific products; policies vary by store.
  • Online Purchases: Check the seller’s website for return rules before buying; find out about return shipping costs and if you can return online buys to a physical store.
  • Act Fast: Don’t delay returns; some holiday windows close quickly, and seasonal staff might be less familiar with policies.
  • Gift Receipts: Always include a gift receipt so the recipient can easily return or exchange gifts.
  • Credit Cards Offer Protection: Use credit cards for purchases as they offer strong fraud protection, helping if a deal seems too good to be true.
Avoiding Scams & Pitfalls
  • Be Wary of Pop-Ups: Check return policies before buying from temporary holiday pop-up shops, as refunds can be difficult later.
  • Spot Fraud: Be cautious of fake websites, inflated discounts, and requests to pay via Zelle or crypto; shop directly on known sites.
  • Report Fraud: If you encounter scams, report them to the BBB or relevant authorities.
