The Nebraska Poison Center is urging families to take extra precautions during the holiday season, when changes in routine and increased household activity can raise the risk of accidental poison exposures.

Officials warn that button and disc batteries found in toys, remotes, watches and musical greeting cards can cause serious injury or death if swallowed. Expanding water beads and rare-earth magnets also pose significant dangers if ingested, potentially causing intestinal blockages or internal injuries.

Alcohol and nicotine products—including vape liquids, cigarettes, chewing tobacco and nicotine pouches—should be stored securely and cleaned up promptly after gatherings, as ingestion can cause vomiting, tremors or seizures. The Poison Center also cautions that CBD and THC products often resemble candy or snacks and should be locked away, out of sight and out of reach of children.

Cleaning products should be stored safely and never mixed, and visiting friends and family are encouraged to keep medications secured rather than left on counters or nightstands. Seasonal plants such as mistletoe, holly berries, yew and poinsettias can also be harmful to children and pets.

The Poison Center reminds residents that prevention is the best treatment. Specially trained nurses and pharmacists are available 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222 for questions or poisoning exposures. The service is free and confidential.

For those experiencing emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm during the holidays, help is available by calling or texting 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
