In an effort call attention to the need to expand diversion programs in Lancaster County, Justice in Action will host a “Longest Night” 12-Hour Prayer Vigil from noon to midnight Sunday outside the City/County building on south 10th Street.

JIA is an interfaith, grassroots coalition of 27 faith communities and Co-President Tobi White tells KLIN News throughout the 12 hours, faith communities will maintain a continuous vigil, praying for individuals and families impacted by incarceration.

“A Longest Night Service will take place from 5-6pm, offering a moment of communal worship and reflection during a season often marked by light, togetherness, and hope,” says White, Lead Pastor at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

“During Christmas and Hanukkah, our faith traditions call us to remember the dignity of every person,” White says. “Yet hundreds of people in Lancaster County will spend these holy days in jail simply because they cannot access the support they need.”

White says Justice in Action will highlight the county’s already successful diversion programs and call for their expansion as a proven, humane response that promotes public safety while keeping families and communities intact.
