Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has announced his campaign for re-election in 2026.

Since taking office in 2023, the Republican AG has remained active in several high-profile lawsuits and courtroom victories. Most notably, Hilgers led Biden v. Nebraska (2023)—a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case in which the Court struck down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness program to cancel hundreds of billions in debt.

In another case, four major semi-truck manufacturers sued by his office agreed to “void” California-led electric vehicle and emissions standards. Hilgers’s office sued the Lorex Corporation and Lorex Technology Inc. earlier this year, accusing the companies of misleading consumers about serious security vulnerabilities in their home surveillance cameras. Nebraska’s chief law enforcement officer is also leading a suit against the state of Colorado over ongoing disputes related to the South Platte River Compact and Nebraska’s planned construction of the Perkins County Canal.

These are just a few of the recent high-profile lawsuits led by Hilgers. Of most consequence locally, Hilgers has frustrated residents with his strict approach to implementing the state’s new medical marijuana regulations, approved by over 70% of voters in 2024.

“We aspire to be the hardest working, most tenacious, entrepreneurial and conservative office in the country,” said Hilgers. “Every day we are defending Nebraskans’ rights. From beating the Biden Administration at the United States Supreme Court, to protecting children from predatory social media companies, fighting for Nebraska’s industries, and protecting low-cost energy and our critical water supplies—we work to honor the trust given to us by Nebraskans.”

Hilgers’s campaign reports a “war chest” of over $850,000 in cash on hand. No Democratic or Republican primary challengers have formally announced a campaign at this time.

Before becoming Nebraska’s 33rd attorney general, Hilgers served six years in the Nebraska Legislature, including as Speaker of the 107th Legislature, chairman of the Executive Board, and chairman of the Rules Committee. He earned a degree in economics from Baylor University and law degree from the University of Chicago.

Candidate filing for the 2026 election begins January 5, 2026. For more information on his re-election campaign, visit mikehilgers.com.
