Good news for Lincoln drivers: South 56th Street between Normal and Pioneers boulevards is open — for now.

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) has announced that crews have completed the main improvements for this phase of the project.

Completed work includes reconstruction of the 56th and Van Dorn Street intersection, resurfacing of asphalt between Van Dorn and Pioneers, asphalt and concrete repairs between Spruce and Calvert streets, and upgrades to sidewalk ramps along southbound 56th Street between Spruce and Calvert streets.

“These upgrades provide smoother travel, improved safety, and better accessibility for pedestrians, while helping minimize future disruptions,” said Thomas Shafer, Assistant Director of Transportation. “We thank the community, including nearby residents and businesses, for their patience throughout this project.”

Crews will return in spring 2026 to complete the project with minimal disruption to traffic. Remaining work includes joint repairs and concrete patches on northbound lanes between Spruce Street and Lowell Avenue and installation of new curb ramps and pedestrian signals at the intersection of South 56th Street and Pioneers Boulevard. Construction began in spring 2025.
