There is a new addition at Pioneers Park Nature Center. Lincoln Parks and Recreation has announced a female bison has been added to their herd. The bison was donated by the Crane Trust. “We are excited for this new addition and grateful for the donation from the Crane Trust,” says Jamie Kelley, Nature Center Coordinator.
“As our herds grow, so does our partnership. Through collaboration and partnerships, we are able to grow our herd and continue to care for the bison.” Kelley also thanked the Friends of Pioneers Park Nature Center who continue to contribute annually, supporting the care of the bison at the Nature Center.
“This new bison will give visitors even more chances to appreciate and learn about the majestic American bison.” The new one was born in 2018. After her mother chose to care only for her twin brother, the bison was moved to the Crane Trust headquarters near Wood River to be raised. The bison’s latest move comes as the Trust works to expand grazing opportunities for additional reproductive females.
Bison were first introduced to Pioneers Park in 1931. The herd expanded in 2017 with three bison loaned from the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari in Ashland. Most recently, six female bison were purchased from the Crane Trust in January 2024 with support from the Friends of Pioneers Park Nature Center.
