Lincoln Police have released more details in Thursday morning’s deadly shooting inside the Casey’s General Store at 13th and ‘E’ Street. Captain Ben Miller says 24-year-old Jarell Wheeler was shot several times by his brother, 23-year-old Emanuel Greenwalt-Claypool.
“Our thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time,” Miller says. Greenwalt-Claypool is in the Lancaster County Jail where he is facing charges of 2nd degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony and 2nd degree assault.
Miller says it all unfolded around 11:10 a.m. when officers responded to the report of multiple gunshot victims in the store. “When officers arrived, they found Wheeler with life-threatening gunshot wounds and a 38-year-old man from Martell, Nebraska, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.”
Both men were taken to an area hospital where Wheeler died fom his injuries. The 38-year-old man was struck twice and Miller says he’s since been released from the hospital. LPD investigators learned Claypool was working as a delivery driver and brining food items into the store. “He arrived at the store to make a delivery at the same time Wheeler was leaving the store,” Miller says.
“Based on store surveillance video and witness statements, we’ve determined Wheeler came back inside, left and then came back again, running toward Claypool with his arm raised.” Miller says at nearly the same time Wheeler began to run, Greenwalt-Claypool reached for the firearm in the front of his waistband and ultimately shot Wheeler multiple times.
“Additional shots also hit the innocent bystander standing at a cooler nearby.” Greenwalt-Claypool remained on scene, surrendered his 9mm handgun to police and cooperated with the investigation. Miller says it’s not know what led to the deadly encounter, but says both brothers have had a history with each other.
