The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed in a two vehicle crash at 162nd and Bluff Road Thursday morning. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says 86-year-old Fernando Ortiz of Waverly was driving a vehicle that was struck by a Lancaster County Engineering Department dump truck putting down gravel.
“He actually just lived up the road, not very far from where the crash occurred,” Houchin says. Ortiz died at the scene and his wife was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, but is now and stable condition. The couple’s dog was also injured and taken to an animal clinic in Waverly.
Houchin says the truck driver did not stop at the stop sign due to the fog and did not see the other vehicle. This is the fourth traffic fatality in Lancaster County in the past two weeks.
