This is Crash Responder Safety Week and on Monday morning first responders from Lincoln Police, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln Fire and Rescue, NDOT and the Nebraska State Patrol gathered for a news conference emphasizing the importance of effective traffic incident response, reducing secondary crashes and the critical role of crash responders.

“This week is about recognizing people who rush towards danger on the road, often in the worst conditions to protect our community members,” says Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow.  “We’re intentionally positioning ourselves to shield others, victims who need help, drivers along the shoulder and crews working the scenes.”

LSO Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says last year 17 law enforcement officers nationwide were killed standing on the side of the road.  “We just ask you to stay alert, avoid distractions and be ready when approaching vehicles.

According to state patrol, troopers have cited 165 drivers for a move over violation so far in 2025.   During the news conference  each agency conducted training exercises, including a demonstration where firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate a person.

“As first responders provide care for those involved, investigate the crash, and work to reopen the roadway, we rely on the public to keep those responders safe,” says Nebraska State Patrol Colonel Bryan Waugh.  “Secondary crashes are preventable. Give your full attention to the road, slow down, and move over when you approach a crash scene.”
