During November and December the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with Kicks for Kids Nebraska, a local nonprofit organization that has provided news shoes for elementary school students in Lincoln since 2011.
It’s part of LSO’s annual charitable giving campaign. Public Information Officer Kelsey Cruz says employees can donate $50 to receive dress and grooming provisions. “Professional staff can wear casual dress, male deputies can go no shave November (December) and female commissioned deputies can wear a ball cap.”
Cruz says it’s a fun way to unite their team behind a cause that directly benefits children and families in the community. Kicks for Kids board member William Boucher says the nonprofit got started after they received a call from a teacher. “She was noticing she had kids who had shoes that weren’t appropriate for the time of year,” Boucher says. “Shoes held together by duct tape or wearing sandals in snow.”
Boucher says what began in one school has now grown to include ever Title 1 elementary and Catholic school in the city. “It amazes us every year that we are able to meet that additional need. We have never had to say no and that has been a wonderful blessing and we’re very excited for this opportunity to help grow this mission even further.”
