Lincoln Police say a man in his 40’s shot and killed himself in the back of a police cruiser Sunday night. LPD Lt. Jason Goodwin tells KLIN News officers responded to a home responded to a home near 54th and Meredeth where a man was reportedly having a mental health crisis.
“When officers arrived, the man was attempting to make entry into a home through a basement window,” Goodwin says. “Before he was seated in the back of a police cruiser, he was searched while officers were interviewing witnesses and evaluating the need to place the man into Emergency Protective Custody.”
Goodwin says around 8:45 the man was able to move his hands to the front of his body, where he pulled a firearm from inside his pants and shot himself. No officers were injured and the officer whose cruiser the man was seated in has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The incident was captured on body worn and cruiser cameras.
