Lincoln Police say 42-year-old Katherine Gogela was the pedestrian struck and killed by an SUV Friday afternoon at 84th and Cherrywood Drive. The initial investigation determined that a red 2010 Jeep Compass, driven by a 19-year-old man, was traveling northbound on South 84th Street approaching the Mopac Trail crossing when it struck Gogela as she was crossing the street.
Medical personnel provided aid to Gogela, who was transported to a local hospital. Police say despite emergency efforts, she died shortly after arrival. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. LPD says there is no indication of impairment or excessive speed.
Gogela was a Pediatrician at Lincoln Pediatric Group. “Kate was an integral part of this clinic long before most of us arrived,” LPG said in a social media post. “As Dr. Mike Germer’s daughter, she started here supporting the chart room and front desk, and following her dedication through college, medical school, and residency, she fulfilled the hope we all shared: her return to this practice. She was a spectacular part of our group, a skilled, caring clinician, a loyal partner, a trusted friend, and a truly wonderful wife, mother, daughter and sister.”
LPG also said her example of dedication and care set a high standard for everyone and that and we miss her greatly. “We ask that you keep Kate’s many loved ones, family, friends, and patients—in your thoughts. Hopefully we can all take time this weekend to appreciate how much better our lives have been because Kate was in them.”
