As you prepare to take your kids trick-or-treating Friday night, Lincoln Police and Lancaster County Sheriffs are issuing some Halloween safety tips.
LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas says wear bright, reflective clothing and ensure costumes fit well to prevent tripping. “Use face paint or makeup instead of a mask to improve vision, and carry a flashlight or glow stick.”
She says stick to a pre-planned route in a familiar neighborhood and stick to sidewalks. Other tips include:
- Crossing streets: Always cross at a corner, using crosswalks if available. Before crossing, look left, right, and left again, and make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
- Candy: Inspect all candy before eating it to check for tampering. Only accept treats from trusted people.
- Group travel: Travel in small groups and make sure younger children are accompanied by an adult. Have emergency contact information readily available.
Thomas urges drivers to slow down in residential neighborhoods, put cellphones away, focus on the road and be mindful of children who may dart into the street.
