The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department is reminding residents that flu season has begun and encouraging everyone to get vaccinated while flu activity remains low.
“Flu activity is currently low, so we can take advantage of this lead time before cases really ramp up,” said Health Director Kerry Kernen. “Getting vaccinated now can help prevent flu-related illness and keep you healthy throughout the winter and holiday season.”
The CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone age six months and older, particularly for those at higher risk of complications, including:
- Adults 65 and older
- Adults with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease
- Pregnant people
- Children under age five, especially those younger than two
Flu shots are widely available through health care providers, pharmacies, and local clinics. LLCHD offers free or low-cost flu vaccines for children ages six months through 18 years who are uninsured, underinsured, on Medicaid, or identify as American Indian or Alaska Native.
Residents can call 402-441-8065 or visit lincoln.ne.gov/health. Select “Vaccine Clinic” for more information.
The department also noted that updated COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are available for eligible age groups. LLCHD recommends residents talk to their health care providers about which vaccines are right for them this season.
