The Saunders County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a double fatality crash that happened late Saturday night northwest of Lincoln. The 9-1-1 Center received a call around 10:50 p.m. about a head on crash on Highway 79 near W. South Street in Valparaiso.
Sheriff Chris Lichtenberg says the preliminary investigation indicates that a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by 19-year-old Austin Walla of Valparaiso was northbound on HWY 79 when it went off the road to the right, overcorrected, went off the road to the left and then struck a southbound Hyundai Santa Fe when he re-entered the roadway.
The Santa Fe was driven by 48-year-old Trina Christensen of Columbus. Lichtenberg says Walla was pronounced dead at the scene. Christensen was airlifted to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.
