The Lincoln High School football team won’t be taking the field on Friday against Millard South.  Principal Mark Larson announced on Tuesday that after gathering information and having many conversations, the varsity game has ben cancelled.

“Due to the extent of player injuries sustained in last week’s game, and a number of other factors, we are communicating with Millard South and the NSAA today that we are forfeiting the game,”  Larson says.

“This was not an easy decision. Ultimately we need to make the best decision for players’ health and safety so we can finish our season. This will allow an extra week for our players to heal,” Larson says.  He tells KLIN News they had nearly a half a dozen kids injured in last week’s game and they were not going to be available this week.

“We believe in our student-athletes and our coaching staff and know they will continue to work hard to finish the season strong.”  Larson tells KLIN News there is a conversation about competitive balance going on in regards to high school athletics in Nebraska and believes it’s a worth while conversation.

“But, I want to make clear that this decision was about what we believe is best for our kids.  We’re not protesting anything.”  Millard South is the top ranked team in the state and has dominated every team they have played.

The Patriots have outscored their five opponents 333-14.
