Residents Can Get Rid of Hazardous Chemicals at Two Events

By Tom Stanton Sep 26, 2025 | 1:00 PM

Lincoln and Lancaster County residents will have a chance to get rid of unwanted chemicals during two no cost drive-through household hazardous waste collection events this week. The first will be held Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Bennet Fire Department.

The following day items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Star City Shores in Lincoln.  The process for visiting a HazToGo collection event is easy.  Environmental Health Educator Sarah Mason says gather unwanted chemicals and place them in a leak-proof tote and load them into your  trunk, pickup bed or rear cargo area. “Drive through one of the waste collection events and the hazardous waste team will unload chemicals from your vehicle,” Mason says.

Accepted items include pesticides, lawn and garden chemicals, household cleaning products, paint thinners, stains, polishes and waxes, turpentine, oil-based paint, pool cleaning chemicals, flea and tick powders, rodent poison, charcoal starter fluids, mixed or old gasoline, antifreeze, brake or power steering fluids, vape products, and items containing mercury such as CFLs and thermometers.

Mason says they will not accept latex paint, motor oil, fertilizers, gas grill cylinders, medicines and pharmaceutical waste, electronics, firearms, ammunition, and batteries.  For information on recycling these and other materials click here and use the “What Bin Does It Go In?” search tool.

HazToGo is located just north of 48th and Superior.
