Lincoln wrapped up the summer with weather that was, in many ways, unremarkable—but in a good way.

KLIN News caught up with Lead Meteorologists Clint Aegerter with the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley for a summer after action report. He said that average high temperatures from June through August came in at 86.5 degrees, almost exactly the seasonal norm of 86.6 degrees. June was slightly on the warmer side, while July and August were a bit cooler than average.

Rainfall totals told a similar story, though precipitation ultimately worked in the Lincoln area’s favor. June was drier than normal, but July and August brought enough precipitation to push the summer total to about an inch above average. The extra summer moisture, Aegerter says, helped ease ongoing drought conditions across eastern Nebraska.

“At the start of summer, we had severe and even extreme drought in parts of the state,” Aegerter said. “By the end of the season, most of that was gone, with just some pockets of abnormally dry conditions left.”

As for severe weather, Lincoln avoided major outbreaks but did see one standout event. The weekend of August 9 and 10, storms brought winds between 90 and 100 miles per hour to parts of southeast Nebraska, including Lincoln and Omaha. Outside of that, Aegerter described the summer as mostly “nit-noid storms”—small, inconsequential.

Looking ahead, he said the above-average rainfall has put the region in a better position heading into fall and winter, though conditions will still depend on what the coming months bring.

“It wasn’t anything too notable,” Aegerter said. “Overall it was just a pretty average summer.”
