Lincoln Police Report: Injury Crashes Down Despite Population Growth

By Chase Porter Sep 24, 2025 | 5:20 PM

Injury crashes in Lincoln have dropped 28% over the last 25 years, even as the city’s population has grown by more than 30%, according to new “Safety by the Numbers” data from the Lincoln Police Department.

Public Information Manager Erika Thomas tells KLIN News the comparison looked at January through August data from 2000 to 2025. “The good news is while we have more people in the city, more drivers, we are having fewer injury crashes and we are seeing that progress on the streets of Lincoln,” Thomas said.

Thomas credited both community awareness and improvements in vehicle technology. While distracted driving from phones remains a problem, she noted that features such as rearview cameras and collision alerts are helping prevent crashes.

LPD uses the Safety by the Numbers posts to highlight trends and promote safety reminders. “We want to remind drivers that they should be stopping at red lights, slowing down at yellow lights, make sure to keep their phones down and their eyes on the road,” Thomas said.

She added that Lincoln drivers can take encouragement from the long-term trend. “Working together as a community to make our roads as safe as possible is the ultimate goal.”

A graph showing the trend has been provided by LPD.
